A Müller Martini Normbinder from around 2000 is a classic industrial perfect binder (adhesive binder / Klebebinder) used primarily for softcover books, brochures, catalogs, and similar products.
The Normbinder line is a long-running Müller Martini perfect-binding system. The high-speed Normbinder SF was introduced in 1976 and was then the world’s fastest perfect binder (rated at 18,000 cycles/hour). By 2000 the family was still actively produced and widely used (common designations include Normbinder 3001, NBS, NB2, NB3, etc.). Machines from that era remain common on the used market today.
Clamp system: Usually 20–35 clamps (24-clamp versions were common), often with a 24″ clamp pitch.Spine preparation: Milling and roughening stations.Gluing: Hotmelt spine and side gluing units, normally with premelters. Some machines also offered cold-glue options.Cover handling: Stream cover feeder (SF type) plus nipping and pressing stations.Format range (typical across listings):
- Maximum ≈ 510 × 305 × 60 mm (spine length × width × thickness)
- Minimum ≈ 140 × 100 × 3 mm
- Cover width up to roughly 640–642 mm
Speed: Commonly rated in the 10,000–15,000 cycles/hour range, depending on the exact model and book parameters.
A Normbinder of this period was frequently part of a full binding line that also included:
- A gathering machine (e.g., Type 3691 or earlier series) with multiple pockets plus a hand-feed station
- Transfer and reject stations
- Conveyor/drying system
- Three-knife trimmer (often a Zenith S / 3672)
- Stacker
These were robust, high-volume workhorse machines that dominated industrial softcover production before the later fully automated, motion-control, and digital-oriented Müller Martini models (Acoro, Corona, Alegro, etc.) became the standard.

A Müller Martini Zenith-S (model 3672) from around 2008 is a high-performance three-knife trimmer designed primarily for softcover (perfect-bound) books, brochures, and catalogs.
It trims the head, foot, and face of bound products in a single pass. Products enter the trimming station spine-leading, are aligned and fully pressed, and are then trimmed using a swing-cut principle against synthetic cutting sticks. This design supports high quality and consistency even at production speeds.
Speed: Up to 7,000 cycles/hourFormat range (standard cassettes):
- Untrimmed: roughly 140 × 103 mm to 384 × 340 mm
- Trimmed: roughly 136 × 100 mm to 304 × 310 mm
- Thickness: typically 2–70 mm
Power/air: Around 14 kW and compressed air requirements common on listings
- Automated make-ready system (AMRYS) with touchscreen control
- JDF/JMF interface capability for workflow integration
- Integrated pre-stacker and automatic infeed
- Ability to make minor adjustments while running
- Exchangeable cutting tables/cassettes and knife-changing provisions
- Robust industrial construction suited for continuous high-volume bindery lines
The Zenith-S was positioned as Müller Martini’s high-performance option for three-side trimming of perfect-bound products. Around 2008 it was a common workhorse trimmer, frequently installed inline with perfect binders (including older Normbinder lines) or used as a standalone unit in commercial binderies. Later models such as the Orbit superseded it in many applications with further automation and changeover improvements.
